Peri Peri Spice Mix (Masala)

Peri Peri or Piri Piri, in Swahili means ‘pepper Pepper’ ! In Spain and Portugal, the term traditionally referred to spicy sauces and chilli based powder used in barbeque.

However, overtime, the term has become popular globally as a spice mix that is mixed with french fries. It’s a delicious combo of pungent and savoury spices with healthy kick of heat. It can add a nice level of savoury spice to soups and sauces.

I usually like to make a lot of blend of spices at home for 2 reasons —

  • 1. It is cheaper
  • 2. You can control the amount of salt and customize the heat to suit your taste.

Which is exactly what I did. This is my fav piri piri spice mix recipe. And I have gotta say — it tastes exactly like store bought piri piri masala.

For all the spice junkies out there, this masala mix is high on the spice quotient. Piri Piri masala can turn your boring dishes into delectable ones. The flavour of all dishes can be taken to whole new level by adding this wonder spice mix.

This masala can be prepared in just a few minutes and will stay fresh up to 2 months and more if refrigerated.

Serve your fries, sandwiches, snacks or noodles with this flavourful mix. Use it for seasoning or marination, the options are plenty and the result will never disappoint you. So, the next time you plan to make fries, noodles or pastas at home, add a pinch of this spice mix to them and see how the flavour elevates.

Tweaks :

Finding peri-peri pepper is not a simple task, but you do have some excellent substitutes that will do just fine.

Common ‘hot and red chilli flakes’ is the simplest swap that will do just fine.

You can adjust any spice according to your tolerance level.
